Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information NSN Explorer collects, why we collect it, and the choices you have. It applies to our website at nsnexplorer.com, including any account features as they become available (together, the "Services").

Information we collect

Information you give us

• Email signups. If you sign up for updates, we store your email address and the time you signed up. We use it to send you what you signed up for, and you can unsubscribe or ask us to delete it at any time.
• Account information. An account is optional. If you create one, we keep your email address, an account number issued by our sign-in provider, and your lists. See Accounts and watchlists below.
• Saved items. The parts, suppliers, supply classes, solicitations, agencies and searches you follow are stored on your account's lists so they work across devices.
• Messages. If you email us, we keep your message and contact details to respond and to improve the Services.

Information we collect automatically

• Usage and device data. Like most websites, we automatically receive information such as your IP address, browser or device type, operating system, referring pages, the pages and records you view, and the dates and times of your visits.
• Cookies and similar technologies. We and our partners may use cookies and similar technologies. See Cookies and similar technologies below.

How we use information

We use the information we collect to:

• Operate, maintain, and improve the Services, including understanding which parts and records are most useful.
• Send you updates you signed up for.
• Provide account features you choose to use, such as watchlists and saved searches.
• Measure and analyze traffic and usage so we can make the Services more useful.
• Show and measure advertising that helps keep the Services free.
• Respond to your messages and requests.
• Protect the Services against fraud, abuse, and security threats, and comply with legal obligations.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use these technologies for a few distinct purposes:

• Essential. Needed for the Services to function, for example to keep you signed in if you create an account.
• Analytics. To understand how the Services are used so we can improve them. See Analytics.
• Advertising. To show advertising and measure its performance. See Advertising.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how parts of the Services work. Where required by law, we ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies.

Accounts and watchlists

An account is optional and free. It exists so you can follow parts (NSNs), suppliers, manufacturers, supply classes, solicitations and agencies, save an Open-demand search, and see on your watchlist page what the public records have added since you last looked.

Signing in. Sign-in is run for us by WorkOS. You sign in with a one-time code sent to your email address, or with your Google, Microsoft or GitHub account. WorkOS keeps your email address, your name and picture if the account you sign in with shares them, and a record of sign-ins (time, IP address and browser) to keep accounts secure. We never see a password.

What your account holds on our side. Your email address, the account number WorkOS issued, your lists and the pages and searches on them, any note you wrote on an item, whether you shared a list, and when you last marked each item reviewed (so we can show what is new). We do not record which pages you read while signed in. Our database provider stores this for us.

Cookies for signed-in visitors. Only when you sign in, the site sets three first-party cookies it needs to work: nsn_session, your encrypted sign-in session, which page scripts cannot read (30 days); nsn_signed_in, which only says that you are signed in, so pages know to ask for your watchlist (30 days); and nsn_oauth_state, which protects the sign-in itself and lasts ten minutes. If you press Follow before signing in, the page remembers it in your browser's session storage until you come back, then forgets it.

Shared lists. A list is private until you turn on sharing. A shared list can be seen by anyone with its link: its name and the pages on it, never your email address or account number. Turning sharing off makes the link stop working.

Deleting your account. "Delete my account" on your watchlist page removes your account, your lists and your WorkOS sign-in at once. Copies can remain in our database provider's backups for a short time before they are overwritten.

Email alerts. Not offered: changes appear on your watchlist page only. If email alerts are added, this policy will be updated first, they will be something you switch on, and every email will carry a working unsubscribe link.

Analytics

We may use analytics services, including Google Analytics, to understand usage patterns such as which pages are visited and how long visits last. These services set their own cookies or identifiers and process data under their own privacy policies. You can opt out of Google Analytics using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked before analytics loads, and it stays off unless they allow it. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser is treated as a "no". Elsewhere analytics loads by default. Change my analytics choice

Advertising

To help keep the Services free, they may display advertising. We work with third-party advertising partners, which may include Google and its advertising products. These partners may use cookies and similar identifiers to serve and measure ads, including personalized ads based on your activity over time and across sites.

You have choices about personalized advertising:

• Manage Google ad personalization at Google Ad Settings.
• Opt out of personalized advertising from participating companies at the Digital Advertising Alliance and the Network Advertising Initiative.

Supplier information

Supplier pages describe companies, not visitors. For each company that appears as the awardee on a government parts award, we show information from these sources:

• Public government records. The company name and location from DLA's public CAGE file, award records from DLA DIBBS and USAspending, and the registration data SAM.gov publishes about each entity: legal and trade name, business address, mailing address, registration dates, business types, NAICS codes and the government and electronic business points of contact (name, title and role only; we do not collect or show those contacts' phone numbers or email addresses).
• The company's own website. Our crawler, NSNExplorerBot, reads up to four public pages of a company's website, obeys robots.txt, and records the phone number and email address the company publishes there. How the crawler behaves.
• Automatic summaries. A short description of what a company makes is written by an AI model from those pages and is labelled as automatically written, with links to the pages read. It can be wrong, so each one points to the company's own site.

Correction and removal. If you represent a supplier, email [email protected] with the CAGE code and say what to change. On request we hide a supplier's contact details (street and mailing address, points of contact, phone and email), its website summary, or both, and stop collecting them; hiding takes effect when the page next refreshes. Award records and the company name stay, because they are public government records.

How we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only as described here:

• Service providers. Companies that help us run the Services process information on our behalf: our hosting and content delivery provider, our database provider, our analytics providers, our advertising partners, and, for accounts, our sign-in provider (WorkOS).
• Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of NSN Explorer, our users, or others.
• Business transfers. If NSN Explorer is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.

Some advertising and analytics partners act as independent controllers of the data they collect through the Services. Depending on where you live, certain ad-related data sharing may be considered a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act. You can exercise the choices described in Advertising and Your rights.

Outbound links

Every figure on the Services links to its official government source record, and we link to other third-party sites as well. Those sites can set their own cookies and collect information about you under their own privacy policies, which we do not control. We are not responsible for the practices of third-party sites.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to opt out of targeted advertising or the "sale" or "sharing" of your information. To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will respond as required by applicable law and will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. With an account you can review and change your lists directly, download a list as a CSV file, and delete your account and its data from your watchlist page at any time.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

Some browsers offer "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signals. Where required by law, we treat a recognized opt-out preference signal as a valid request to opt out of targeted advertising and the sale or sharing of personal information for that browser or device.

Data retention

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Email signups are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Analytics and advertising data are retained according to the settings and policies of the relevant providers.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including access controls, least-privilege database credentials, and encryption in transit. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children's privacy

The Services are intended for professional and business use and are not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

International users

We operate from the United States, and information we collect may be processed in the United States and other countries where we or our providers operate. These countries may have different data protection laws than your own. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Services after an update means you accept the revised policy.
